- The State is to cut its budget for the city of Amsterdam by €45 million. Financial alderman of the city, Hester van Buren, has been writing the city’s financial report for 2024 and initially the city thought there’s be a surpless to the budget of around €45million. Now however, it looks like we will be 6.5 million in the red. One of the factors determining how much money the city gets, has always been the number of people estimated to be below the poverty line and entitled to claim certain benefits. Last year the rules, changed however, and now the budget is corrected against the number of people actually claiming it. It seems far fewer people needed the assistance in Amsterdam than was thought and so the funds are being clawed back. It’s not just the low income benefits that cause the financial woes though. The city also failed to sell off an energy company it owns, AEB, and has had to include the financial risks associated with it, totalling €59million, in last year’s accounts.
- Discrimination is up! Or claims or it are at least. That’s according to a report for the Netherlands’ Home Office-(BiZa). Up 623 on 2023 to 9613 last year, and that’s just incidents reported to the police. About 50% to do with cultural background; 29% sexuality; 9% antisemitism. A report came out on Thursday and looked at cases of discrimination reported to official authorities and instances. Discriminatie.nl where incidents can be reported said they saw a doubling of cases between 2023 and 24, partly due to people becoming more aware of the site’s existence but also because incidents are.. Well just up!! 14,796 reports in 2024. In Amsterdam, it’s even more than double though, and that might be even scarier to some of our listeners. In 2023, 862… but in 2024 there were 2025 reports of discrimination in the city. That’s an increase of around 134%. Just to make things even scarier – Peter Holla – Amsterdam’s police chief – says they believe only about 1 in 10 incidents ever get reported.
